A big and warm welcome to Gandalf. If you’ve been following his story we were able to rescue him before being returned to the auction yard. He wasn’t going to be suitable as a rental horse so his fate looked dim. The owner was willing to relinquish him (for a fee) so he arrived in Santa Rosa earlier this week. We were unable to bring him to our rescue right away so a huge thank you to Betsy Bueno with Lost Hearts & Souls Rescue for taking in this special guy for now.
He’s SUPER sweet—although he needs some time to get acquainted. It seems he has been roughly handled over the years so he’s very sensitive to sudden movements. Once you gain his trust you can handle him all over. He has settled in nicely at Betsy’s…is enjoying his new equine friends over the fence.
Gandalf is about 15hh; gray with black mane and tail. We had the vet out—she thinks he’s about 11 years old (we were originally told that he was 14); she gave him his shots and overall he’s healthy. We are uncertain of his breed-- looks like a Paso Fino, however he is not gaited, so we are considering Andalusian or Lipizzaner. We are continuing to gather data on his breed and might do a DNA test to be sure.
He has settled in well but we still need to assess him for riding. Stay tuned….
In the meantime, we welcome any and all donations to help us with his “bail” and vet costs which totals $1,000. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
