HORSES RESCUED IN 2016
BEAU - AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP OR ADOPTION
Beau came to SERRA in March 2016. Throughout most of his life, Beau has been a ranch, trail and roping horse. We don't know his exact age but he appears to be in his upper teens. Because he appears to be head shy, it is believed that his first teenage owner might have hit Beau in the head with a rope from team roping causing Beau’s wary reaction.
Over a year ago, Beau was purchased by a caring couple. For the last year he has been an excellent and steadfast trail horse to them. The new owners, knowing little about horses took Beau to a local young trainer who abused him. Not knowing natural horsemanship, this young inexperienced ‘trainer’ physically and mentally damaged Beau. He is in SERRA’s rehab for both.

MR. KRINGLE - ADOPTED!
We were not looking for anything to rescue. At the time we had plenty in our own area and were diligently moving horses into homes. However, as fate would have it, this little man was dumped off at the auction yard in Texas, had 4 hours to live, and came across the radar of our sister rescue, Horses Healing Hearts.

SPIRIT - ACCEPTED INTO THE PARELLI RE-HOMING FOR LIFE PROGRAM!
Spirit has been accepted into the Rehoming for Life Parelli Foundation Program. He will be trained for 18 months by a Parelli Instructor and then will be up for auction to be adopted. We couldn't be more then happy for him.
Spirit was discovered December 31, 2011 by a woman in an empty pasture in Castro Valley (Norris Canyon). The horse was wearing a green halter, hooves overgrown and still with 3 aluminum racing shoes nailed on his long feet. This good woman contacted Melissa Austin; Horses Healing Hearts, Inc. and Melissa sprang into action. She had Spirit trailered asap to a stable in Castro Valley called Mavericks. HHH started his intake and rehab under the veterinary care of Dr. Robert Hibner at this location.
Spirit had a very poor malnourished body score of 2 out of 9, a belly full of sand, and holes (3 ulcers) through his tongue from licking the ground and dirt for any sustenance. There was none to be found and slowly his body devoured his fat and muscles to stay alive. His right front lower leg appeared to have been wrapped, and he was seen wearing an old worn leg wrap when found that obviously had not been cared for in many months. Later upon x-ray we would discover his right front fetlock had a fractured sesamoid bone. This is a typical racetrack stress injury to young horses that is career ending. He was then thrown out to pasture and forgotten as used up and now useless to his owner. HHH followed up with x-rays that confirmed his sesamoid fracture had completely healed itself and no signs of bone fragments remained. Spirit was moving soundly, just weak from starvation and malnourishment. But had a most kind nature.
Horses Healing Hearts, Inc. rehabbed Spirit in mind, body & soul from December 31, 2011 till present. Spirit has been HHH's ambassador - they were told he would never be sound for riding and as the years went on Melissa saw this wasn't the case at all. Spirit would go on to have monthly chiropractic adjustments and follow up lameness exams. HHH struggled with colic during his rehab and his left rear leg having occasional swelling from weakness.
Again, time healed his wounded body and HHH discovered through SERRA’s Parelli Program to be a fun loving Left Brain Extrovert! The means that Spirit is FUN, very curious, high play drive, exuberant and joyful. He is Mr. Gotta GO! And loves toys too.
Spirit was chosen to enter the Parelli Foundation’s Rehoming for Life Program to be trained further by Erin Fowle, Parelli 3 Star Instructor. One of their best! He will complete his 18 months and enter a fun competition to show all that he has learned and can do!
Spirit aka Lichtenstein was initially purchased as a young colt for a staggering $60,000. Through his athletic abilities and good winnings he was soon nominated to the prestigious Breeders’ Cup which means he could have been eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby. Hard to imagine that such a magnificent human loving beautiful horse was left to starve. A travesty of human depraved indifference until one good woman reached out on his behalf to help! It only takes ONE. Bravo!
Spirit was last raced December 3, 2011 and he "won" at Golden Gate Fields under prestigious trainer/owner Steve Sherman who has trained many winners.
