Meet Rio, a recent starvation case. He's the sweetest boy given what he's been through. We have had him vet checked now and are giving him everything he needs.

 

Following a slow-feed program we already see a difference with a little bit of weight gain. His personality is emerging and he is settling in nicely and making new friends.

Rio will need to be on pelleted feed for the rest of his life.  He can graze a little out in the pasture but to keep weight on he needs pelleted feed.  Before arriving at SERRA, he lived with other horses who pushed him off his hay so he had to resort to dried out grass, dirt and rocks.  The rocks wore down his teeth so he can no longer chew hay.

 

Rio will make a wonderful companion horse and is also suitable for very light riding.
